When the Walls Spoke
When the Walls Spoke

When the Walls Spoke is a collection of fragments from a changing Malé. Once, the walls of Malé carried the names of its streets. Painted and embossed onto weathered façades, these names formed part of the city’s everyday visual language, quietly guiding generations through familiar streets and neighbourhoods.

Today, as old buildings give way to new structures, these walls and the familiar names they carried are gradually disappearing, replaced by contemporary road-name signposts. What was once an integral part of the city’s streetscape is becoming a fading memory.

Through a collection of watercolour fragments, When the Walls Spoke creates a visual archive of these overlooked details of Malé’s urban heritage. The varied colours, worn surfaces, fading lettering, and traces of time capture not only the physical ageing of the walls, but also the gradual transformation of a place deeply rooted in memory and familiarity. Together, these fragments document the street names on the walls that once spoke to those who passed by them.

This work is a way of holding on to a part of Malé that is slowly being lost. It reflects a city in transition, where familiarity gives way to change and memories remain embedded in the places we once knew.
